Hear from Gerard Peets, Executive Director, Infrastructure Canada, on the goals and process of the Challenge and from panelists from across Canada who will highlight their experiences in rallying their communities behind a unique idea, discuss examples of strategic partnerships, and opportunities for First Nations in the Challenge. Audience members will be invited to ask questions of the panelists and Infrastructure Canada including asking panelists on their experiences in rallying their community behind a unique idea.

Background:

On Friday, November 24, 2017, Infrastructure Canada announced the official start of the Smart Cities Challenge in Canada. Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities’ message can be viewed on the Infrastructure Canada Website: http://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/plan/cities-villes-eng.html

The Smart Cities Challenge invites communities across Canada – small towns, large urban centres, and Indigenous communities-  to bring forward their best ideas for improving the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology. Four prizes ranging from $5 Million to $50 Million will be awarded to 4 deserving communities. Applications are due by April 24, 2018. Five finalists per award will receive $250,000 each to finalize their proposals. The Smart Cities Challenge is the first program delivered via the new “Impact Canada Initiative” platform. In summary:

  • The Smart Cities Challenge is a pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit).
  • The Challenge encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology.
  • One prize of up to $50 million is open to all communities, regardless of population;
  • Two prizes of up to $10 million each is open to all communities with populations under 500,000 people;
  • One prize of up to $5 million is open to all communities with populations under 30,000 people.
  • Infrastructure Canada is engaging Indigenous leaders, communities and organizations to finalize the design of a competition specific to Indigenous communities that will reflect their unique realities and issues. Indigenous communities are also eligible to compete for all the prizes in the current competition.
  • The Challenge will be an open and transparent process. Communities that submit proposals will also post them online, so that residents and stakeholders can see them. An independent Jury will be appointed to select finalists and winners.
  • All of the information required to participate in the Smart Cities Challenge can be found on the Impact Canada Challenge Platform at: http://impact.canada.ca
  • Applications are due by April 24, 2018.
  • The finalists will be announced in Summer 2018.
  • This will be followed by a period to develop final proposals. The final proposal submission deadline is Winter 2019.
  • The winners will be announced in Spring 2019. This will be followed by the implementation phase.

ICF Canada, in partnership with Infrastructure Canada will host this English Webinar to discuss Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge on January 10, 2018. A French edition of this Webinar will also be offered in January (Date TBA).
