Canadian Smart Cities Challenge Update

All of the cities shortlisted on the Federal Government’s Smart Cities Challenge for the Grand Prize of $50 Million have been previously qualified by ICF as Intelligent Communities. Announced on June 1, the following cities were shortlisted to pursue the top prize of $50 Million: Waterloo Region, Ontario; Vancouver-Surrey, British Columbia; Edmonton, Alberta; Montreal, Quebec; and Quebec City, Quebec. In addition, Nunavut and Parkland County, also ICF recognized Intelligent Communities in Canada, were also shortlisted for smaller prize categories.

Each finalist community received $250,000 to facilitate and develop their Phase 2 applications. This initiative is similar to the $40 Million USD award that Columbus, Ohio received from the U.S. Department of Transportation in the DOT’s Smart City Challenge the year after Columbus was awarded the Intelligent Community of the Year in 2015. In Columbus’ case additional community and private sector funding to over $500 Million helped their community to build a program focused on autonomous vehicles/ AI and IoT as well as softer urban issues such as infant mortality.
